Excellent technical information. Many people ask the same question about whether they can get shocked if they contact the perp who has just been shocked. This makes them hesitant about purchasing a personal protection product that could save their life or that of a loved one.

Good information. I would like to add that every woman should have some form of personal protection and pepper spray is user friendly and allows a distance between the user and the attacker.

Yes. You are correct there are many factors that determine the overall effectiveness and quality of pepper spray. Truth is most brands on the market are filled by independent fillers. There are really only about 5 pepper sprays brands (manufacturers) on the market that actually make and fill their own pepper spray. Conversely there is about 25 or so independents. This means that a company that has a brand (say brand X) may or may not make their own product. The problem here is that most of these so called independents can't tell you anything about their product. If you ask them they will tell you things like "our spray is 2 Million SHU's and 10%". All this answers tell you is what the and how much of the raw material was going into the can of pepper spray. IT WILL NOT TELL YOU THE HEAT OF THE PEPPER ONCE IT IS BLENDED WITH THE OTHER INGREDIENTS. Over 95% of the pepper sprays on the market DO NOT live up to their claims. Actually what I should say is their math is not accurate.

They only way to give an accurate effectivness of the pepper spray is to send it to a lab for an expensive test called High Pressure Liquid Chromotography (HPLC). This will give you the TRUE out of the nozzle performance of the pepper spray. To my knowledge there is only one true manufacturer Security Equipment Corporation the makers of Sabre-Red that reports the actual HPLC of thier product. Likewise there is only 1 independant pepper spray brand "HEATWAVE" by Security Plus Omni Corporation that reports this out of the nozzle heat rating as well.

Both Security Equipment Corp. and Security Plus give the only out of the nozzle heat rating guarantees in the industry. There are no others manufacturers or independents that make these guarantees. When shopping for pepper sprays keep this in mind. Pepper spray is a great choice for personal defense and with most items under $20.00 is saving a few dollars worth your life or the life of a loved one?

Simply buy quality product from a company that reports their HPLC results and guarantees their product. Find "HEATWAVE" Products here: http://www.planetmace.com/ppspstream.html

Yes there is a solution for you. We sell an item called an SC-1000 Home Alarm (not on our site). It is a wireless system and it can be programmed to dial your cell phone in the case of trouble. Call us at 1-800-735-1797 and we will be happy to discuss it with you. It is perfect for your application.

What are some options if you are renting and can not put in a home alarms system such as ADT or Brinks? Is there something that is wireless so that I dont have to tear up something that is not mine? Also what if I want to move? Is there a system that can move with me? Great article.
