Mace Security Products: Pepper Gel

November 14th, 2008

Pepper sprays are a common item used by law enforcement and military police all over the world. It has also become a standard self defense tool with the general populace and one of the most popular brands is Mace. Pepper gel is just one of many Mace security products on the market today. As I’m sure you’ve probably heard of pepper spray, well pepper gel does the same thing except the delivery system is in gel form and not a spray.

Pepper spray is comprised of Oleoresin Capsicum, or OC, which is a derivative of cayenne pepper. A shot of pepper spray to the face of an attacker will trigger temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, coughing and choking. Not to mention it causes a lot pain. Because the natural response from someone sprayed with pepper spray is to rub their eyes, it makes the situation worse for them and now their hands are also burning. Don’t worry; pepper spray does not cause any permanent damage.

There are many reasons pepper gel is one of the best Mace security products. Pepper Gel works by suspending the OC in a gel form instead of a liquid stream. This means it can reach a greater distance, sticks to an attacker like glue, is less contaminating, the strength of the pepper is more robust, and it’s non-flammable. Unlike regular pepper spray, the gel holds up better against wind which is one of the reasons it’s so effective. The reason for this is that the thick consistency prevents the wind from blowing it back into your face like normal pepper spray would. Pepper gel also uses a UV dye to make identifying an attacker much easier for law enforcement.

Each container of Mace pepper gel contains over 1.5 oz, or 45g, of pepper spray. This provides you with 7 one second bursts. It also features a flip top safety cap that will prevent the pepper gel from accidentally discharging. It is ideal for auto, home, business, RV’s, or camping use. This truly is one of the most effective Mace security products.

Batons are great non- lethal self defense devices that can be carried in your car, purse, or even on a motorcycle. Telescopic batons have an 8” steel shaft that can extend to 16”, 21”, or 26” with just a flick of the wrist. The handle is usually wrapped in foam, making for an easy grip and they come with a nylon holder. Some of the telescopic steel batons have an optional LED light add-on that you simply screw-on.

So who should use a baton? Basically anyone who finds themselves alone day or night can use this tool. If you find yourself alone in a parking lot or in your car, the steel baton will level the field if you feel threatened. Unfortunately, you have the potential to be assaulted at almost anytime and any place. The telescopic steel baton will give you a boost of confidence for any possible threatening situation.

Spitfire Pepper Spray

October 24th, 2008

Carrying a gun is not always the best option when it comes to protecting oneself. There are many non-lethal self defense items on the market today and it’s important to choose one that best fits your needs. One of the most popular and most commonly used self defense devices is pepper spray. Pepper spray works by irritating the mucous membranes, causing the attacker to experience difficulty breathing and temporary blindness.

The problem with some pepper sprays is they are not convenient to carry and can accidentally disperse in your pocket or purse. Also, a number of pepper spray dispensers are large and none refillable, which produces a lot of waste. Fortunately there’s Spitfire pepper spray! It’s light, discreet, and suitable to carry on your key ring at all times. Spitfire pepper spray has an inner safety mechanism to stop any accidental discharges and it’s also refillable.

Spitfire pepper sprays are designed for easy use and can be fired in any direction or angle. To activate, simply press your thumb on the safety trigger and a potent mist is quickly dispersed. Spitfire pepper spray works by releasing a cone of atomized pepper bits that make it effortless to hit an assailant’s face. This pepper spray is rated at 2 million SHU and has a quicker result than a stream or foam pepper spray. Another important feature is its unique design that allows for the quickest release possible from your key ring. That means if you are in your car, you can access your pepper spray without having to turn the car off.

A Guide to Buying Pepper Spray

October 23rd, 2008

Pepper spray is one of the most widespread and useful self defense devices on the market today. They come in several different styles and formulations, which can become a little overwhelming for people buying pepper spray for the first time. To start with, there are three fundamental chemical compounds pepper sprays are made from: CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile), CN (alphachloroacetaphenone), and OC (Oleoresin Capsicum).

CS and CN cause irritation to the mucous membranes, causing the eyes to sting and tear. Both can take 5 to 30 seconds to become effective and it’s possible they won’t work on someone who is drunk, psychotic, on drugs, or doesn’t have the ability to feel pain. Because of these limitations, some people prefer OC defense sprays.

OC, or Pepper Spray, is an inflammatory agent that when sprayed into a person’s face will enlarge the capillaries causing their eyes to slam shut and experience short-term blindness. It also inflames the throat and nose, which restricts breathing and causes the assailant to cough uncontrollably.

When you are thinking about buying pepper spray there are several different brands to consider. Perhaps the most recognizable brand is Mace. Mace has been the leader in developing self defense sprays for several years. There are other brands which are just as efficient, such as Pepper Shot, Heatwave and Wildfire. All of these brands offer potent self defense sprays that can be accessed in a split second.

Before buying pepper spray, it is also important to determine what it is needed for. Now days pepper spray is designed to be effective against animals as well as humans. Canine, or dog, pepper spray and bear pepper spray are available for outdoor enthusiasts. These formulations are specially designed to be useful against the chemistry of animals. Dog spray is perfect for joggers, runners or walkers, while bear sprays is ideal for hunters or hikers. There are pepper sprays for almost all situations and come in a wide range of sizes, even 9oz and 1lb canisters for protection against several attackers.

If you would prefer a pepper spray that is easy to conceal or one that is not obvious, there are several options to choose from. There are pepper sprays that disguised as ordinary looking pens, rings, lipsticks, and even pagers. These harmless looking items offer great advantages when used on unsuspecting assailants.

What You Should Know About Mase Spray

October 22nd, 2008

With the rising rate of violent crimes, more people are relying on self defense products to protect them at home and on the streets. Pepper spray is one of the most common self defense items used and Mase spray is the most popular brand.

Mase spray is created from a natural chemical, a by-product of various hot pepper plants called Oleoresin Capsicum, and this is also the reason Mase OC sprays are often referred to as pepper sprays. Mase spray is non-toxic and will not cause any permanent damage to those who are sprayed with it and the initial effects can take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to wear off.

OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) sprays come in strengths of 1%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 18%. Because of the formula variations between all the different pepper spray brands, these percentages are not always a good indication of their effectiveness. A 1% spray can be as effective, if not sometimes more effective than a 5% or 10% concentration of OC spray.

There are three aspects that need to be considered when determining which pepper spray is more effective. They are: the OC heat rating, the type of carrier, and the type of spray. The heat producing ability of OC is quantified in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). SHU is typically used to determine how hot a pepper is, but since pepper spray is derived from hot peppers, SHU can be used for pepper sprays as well. Peppers range from zero SHU, bell peppers being the mildest, to 5000 SHU for jalapeno peppers. Habanero peppers, typically used in OC sprays, range from 250,000 to 300,000 SHU.

Next, you should consider the type carrier agent being used for the OC spray. The carrier agent not only holds the OC solution, but also aids in the dispersal. The most common carrier agent is alcohol ketone combined with other solvents and oils. The third important aspect to keep in mind is the dispersion spray pattern.

These last two pieces are related because it’s these characteristics that determine the droplet size sprayed at an attacker. The smaller the droplet size is when in the air, the more effective the spray will be under most conditions. This also lends to its ability to be inhaled quickly and entirely. This allows it to quickly be dispersed onto the mucous membranes, releasing the heat and inflammation properties in one or two seconds.

One of the greatest benefits from using Mase spray, is its ability to keep attackers back at a safe distance while immobilizing him and stopping an attack. Most defense sprays have a range of up to 12 feet and will stop an assailant within seconds. Overall, Mase spray is a great self defense choice.
